Try using lavender oil for headache relief... all-natural and effective relief for painful headache symptoms.

Home remedies for a headache using lavender oil

Most of us suffer from headaches – some of us more often than others. Headache pain varies between individuals, with some pain being described as mild, intense or throbbing. If your headache is accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and smell you may even be suffering from a migraine, usually caused by constricted blood vessels in the head.

Stress, sickness, hunger, fatigue and allergies are just some of the causes of a headache. Tight muscles in the neck and head region can intensify a headache. Whilst over-the-counter medications can provide relief from your symptoms, using lavender oil to treat a headache is a far better alternative if you care about your long-term health.

Is lavender oil good for treating headaches?

Because lavender has a high percentage of esters (linalyl acetate) it offers both anti-inflammatory and sedative properties, making it especially good to use if you’re trying to relieve nasty headache symptoms during the night time hours.

Sometimes if our headaches are caused by stress, simple relaxation is the key to loosening tight neck and head muscles that are most likely causing your headache.

I have an electric oil burner at home (and a candle one in my office!) that I use whenever I’m trying to relieve headache pain. I simply top up my oil burner with water, add at least 8-10 drops of 100% pure lavender oil (no blends) and deeply inhale whilst closing my eyes. Sometimes I’ll combine this with a cold compress on the back of my neck and after 10-15 minutes I’m feeling much better.

If my headache is more severe and has turned into a migraine, I’ll go and lie down in a darkened room and have my oil burner with lavender oil beside me, deep breathing and relaxing my body for at least half an hour.

It’s not always easy to treat a headache when you’re busy or on the go (especially with kids!), so try making a lavender compress. Add 5-6 drops of lavender oil to a cup of very cold water. Soak this mixture into a clean washcloth, wring it out and then drape it across your forehead or back of neck - wherever you need relief the most.

How to use lavender oil for headaches

When I’m suffering from a headache, I find that massaging a few drops of lavender oil on my temples or back of neck (depending on where the headache pain is) to be really soothing.

Here’s a recipe for making your own headache massage oil using lavender:-

  • Using an amber glass bottle, add 1 oz. of carrier oil (eg. sweet almond or jojoba oil).
  • Add 10-12 drops of lavender oil.
  • Shake well to combine, or you can gently roll the bottle between your hands - the warmth of your hands will help blend the essential oil (lavender) into the carrier oil.
  • Apply 3-4 drops of this massage oil to your fingertips and massage in a circular motion on your temples, back of neck or forehead. Always be careful never to get the mixture near your eyes.

Using a lavender oil mist to treat headaches

If you have a diffuser at home you can create a lavender oil mist to spray about your room and house.

Simply add 6-10 drops of lavender oil to your diffuser (as directed by the instructions). You can use this mist to spray on or near pillows, in the bathroom or around the office if you have to keep working. This one is great to keep in your handbag to be used anywhere.

If you don’t have an oil burner you can always add 2-3 drops of lavender oil onto a cotton ball or tissue. Place it near your nose and inhale deeply for relief of headache symptoms. If you’re new to using lavender oil, use only 1 drop to ensure that you’re not overly sensitive to the oil.

Using lavender oil for headache relief

You don’t just have to use straight lavender oil to relieve headache tightness and pain, here’s a few basic recipes for essential oil blends that you can use with any of the methods outlined above:-

Blend 1
8 drops lavender oil
4 drops chamomile

Blend 2
4 drops spearmint oil
8 drops lavender oil

Good luck with using lavender oil to relieve headache symptoms!
