Use lavender oil for migraines - ease suffering in a natural chemical-free way.

Using lavender oil to treat migraines

The scent of lavender oil has a very strong effect on the human body’s central nervous system. It is powerful enough to treat conditions such as anxiety, stress and insomnia - all contributing factors to migraines.

By placing a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow, or by burning lavender oil in a diffuser, you can help to relieve symptoms of nasty migraine headaches.

What causes migraines? What are the symptoms?

There is no known ‘cure’ for migraines – in fact medical professionals simply do not know what causes migraines. Diet, stress, alcohol, caffeine, sleeplessness and anxiety are just some of the conditions known to affect migraines, but we really don’t know the cause.

Symptoms of a migraine include:-

  • Visual ‘aura’ such as seeing various shapes, bright spots or flashes of light
  • Blurred vision
  • Pins and needles sensations in an arm or leg
  • Speech or language problems
  • Pain on one side or both sides of your head
  • Pain that has a pulsating, throbbing quality
  • Sensitivity to light, sounds and sometimes smells
  • Nausea and vomiting

Benefits of lavender oil to help migraine headaches

The main benefit to using lavender oil to help treat a migraine is it’s all natural. Over the counter medications will contain harmful chemicals, and even though they may need to be used in extreme cases of migraine suffering, you can always try lavender oil first to relieve some of the symptoms.

Lavender oil can relieve anxiety and stress that goes hand-in-hand with suffering from a migraine - it can also help you relax and fall into a deep sleep to help relieve migraine pain.

Home remedies for migraines - alternatives to medication

There are many ways to use lavender oil as a home remedy for migraines - here’s just a few:-

Burn lavender oil
Add a few drops of lavender oil to your oil burner, lie down in a dark, quiet room and try to relax. If you can stand it, play soft, soothing music or use a guided meditation CD or app to help you relax further.

Make a lavender pillow or pouch
Take a square of fabric such as a scarf, bandana or a cloth napkin and lay out flat. Pour a handful of dried lavender in the middle, then fold over in half. Stitch around the three open sides to keep the lavender encased in the fabric, and there you have your own lavender pillow.

If sewing isn’t your strong point you can simply roll up the fabric like a lolly and then secure each end with a rubber band.

Rest your pouch/pillow across your forehead, inhaling deeply to help relieve your migraine.

Lavender cold compress
Dampen a clean cloth with cold water, then wring to dry. Add a few drops of lavender oil, then fold neatly so it fits across your forehead or eyes (closed). Relax in a dark, quiet room and inhale the scent of the lavender deeply to relax your body.

Sometimes if you place a cold compress across the back of your neck this will help also.

Take a lavender bath
A hot bath is great for relieving stiff, sore and tense muscles so if you add a few drops of lavender oil to a hot bath, this can be a powerful tool to help combat against migraines. The lavender fragrance will rise up as soon as you fill the bath with warm to hot water. Simply lie in the bath with eyes closed and relax, inhaling the vapours.

If your migraine still persists then you may need to take your usual prescribed medication.

Lavender oil is not a cure for migraines – it’s simply a way of helping to ease migraine suffering in a natural way.
